Walt Disney World in January - Crowd Warnings, special events, promotions, ride closures & refurbishments

There are some things going on at Walt Disney World in January that you need to know about:

Disney World Crowd Warnings for January 2012:

Crowds at Disney World will very heavy through January 3rd as people enjoy their Christmas break but the rest of the month will have low to moderate crowds. Low crowds mean shorter hours and fewer shows so plan accordingly.

  • 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend – January 6th – 8th . The Disney marathons are very popular so we’ll see a bit of a surge in the crowds for this weekend. The marathon events won’t affect the theme parks but you will find runners and their families at the resorts and visiting the parks when not involved with the marathon itself. The Magic Kingdom will see the largest number of visitors.
  • Fantasmic ! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night - in fact, there are only 4 nights with Fantasmic! peformances in January. It will be offered January 1 - 8, 2012.  This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Disney may add a second, later performance on certain evenings around New Years – if they do, the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one Warning: When there are limited performances, you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios is going to be busier on days featuring a Fantasmic! show. Afternoons will be especially busy as those with Park Hopper tickets come over to see the show. A good touring plan will help you manage this. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
  • Disney’s Main Street Electrical Parade (Magic Kingdom) – This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a Main Street Electrical Parade. The Main Street Electrical Parade will be presented on January 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 12, 14, 15, 16, 19, 2012. If Disney offers a second evening parade, the later parade will be less crowded than the earlier.
  • Avoid going to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot on New Years Eve. There is a good chance that the parks could close because of capacity level crowds and the lines will be horrible. Disney’s Hollywood Studios & Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme parks are much better choices for these days. Disney’s Hollywood Studios will have fireworks at midnight that night.
  • Extra Magic Hours – (Special theme park hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest)! Crowds will be low enough that January (after January 3rd) is really the only time we recommend taking in the Extra Magic Hours. We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day through January 3rd. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone – that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You’ll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort – you don’t want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you. 

A good touring plan is still important during low crowds. Shorter hours and fewer show times mean that some advance planning will make sure you see and do the things that are important to you. Special Events at Disney World in January:

  • Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –January 1 - 3, 2012. This is an incredible holiday light display beginning around dusk. Every 15 minutes, the display will glow and dim to correspond with the holiday music. It is quite a sight! No extra ticket needed – included with your park admission.
  • Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade (Animal Kingdom) – Offered through January 2nd.
  • 2012 Walt Disney World Marathon. January 6 - 8. Very popular event. 

Temporary Disney World Attraction Closures and refurbishments:

  • Magic Kingdom -Dumbo the Flying Elephant closed January 9 - March 11, 2012.
  • Magic Kingdom - Big Thunder Mountain Railroad closed January 9 - May 27, 2012.
  • Magic Kingdom - Main Street Electrical Parade not offered January 19 - February 16, 2012. Magic Kingdom - Liberty Square Riverboat closed January 28 - February 3, 2012.
  • Magic Kingdom -Ariel's Grotto & Pooh's Playful Spot have closed to make room for the big Fantasyland expansion project.
  • Magic Kingdom -Mickey's Toontown Fair closed to make room for the new Fantasyland Expansion Project. The Walt Disney World Railroad will continue to run during construction but the Toowntown Station will be closed. You can meet Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and the Disney Princesses in the new Town Square Theater, near the Main USA Street Train Station. You can meet Tinker Bell at Tinkerbell's Magical Nook in Adventureland.
  • Magic Kingdom - Plaza Ice Cream Parlor (Restaurant) will be closed January 4 - March 27, 2012.
  • Epcot - Tutto Italia Ristorante closed January 8 - April 27, 2012.
  • Epcot - Innoventions: House of Innoventions exhibit closed December 4, 2011 - May 2012.
  • Epcot - Honey, I Shrunk The Audience 3D has been replaced by Captain EO, featuring Michael Jackson.
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios - Fantasmic! no performances from January 9 - February 12, 2012.
  • Disney's Hollywood Studios - Honey, I Shrunk The Kids Play Area closed from January 13 - March 11, 2012.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom - Kali River Rapids closed January 24 - February 9, 2012.
  • Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon (water park) –will be closed January 5 - March 17, 2012 for its annual refurbishment. Blizzard Beach will be open at this time.
  • Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge/ Kidani Village - Samawati Springs Pool Slide will be closed January 9 - February 3, 2012. The pool itself will remain open during this time and guests may also use the slide at the Jambo House pool.
  • Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort/ Fuentes del Morro Feature Pool will be closed January 23 at 7:00PM - 25, 2012. The Pirate Ship Water Play Area will remain closed through January 26, 2012.
  • Disney's Contemporary Resort/ Feature Pool Slide will be closed January 5 - February 17, 2012. The pool itself will remain open.
  • Disney's Polynesian Resort - Beach Sand Renourishment. January 4-16, 2012. This will be done in sections so portions of the beach will be closed while others remain open.
  • Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort - The Doubloon Lagoon feature pool will be closed January 17 - 18, 2012. Guests may use the pools at Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort.
  • Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort - The Alligator Bayou leisure pool near buildings 24 & 25 will be closed January 23 - 27, 2012. The Alligator Bayou leisure pool near buildings 16, 17 & 18 will be closed January 30 - February 3, 2012. The Ol' Man Island feature pool will remain open.
  • We expect to see more refurbishments announced between now and the end of the year. Check back to this page or subscribe to our newsletter for updates.
  • Cirque Du Soleil - La Nouba will not have any performances January 17 - 21, 2012.

Resort Swimming Pools - Disney typically does upgrades on several resort pools in the cooler months of the year. We’ll continue to update this as new information comes available.

Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service)

  • New luggage procedure for late night arrivals. Luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM. Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk.

    • Presidents' Day Week - Saturday February 17 - 26, 2012. Expect this week to be very busy.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney’s Hollywood Studios) –This great show is no longer presented every night. It will be offered February 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 26, 29. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it – arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Disney may add a second, later performance on certain evenings during busier times – if they do, the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one Warning: When there are limited performances, you know Disney’s Hollywood Studios is going to be busier on days featuring a Fantasmic! show.     • Super Bowl Sunday is February 5th, 2012. Give your favorite football fan permission to stay in the room to watch the big game. Expect the ESPN Club restaurant at Disney's Boardwalk Inn Resort to be VERY crowded during the game.
    • 2012 Disney's Princess Half Marathon. February 24 - 26, 2012. This popular event doesn't really affect your time in the park but you will notice participants and their families in the resorts. Be sure to book your accomodations early if you're planning a trip to Walt Disney World that includes these dates..

    There are some things going on at Walt Disney World in March that you need to know about:

    Crowd Warnings:

    Crowds will get heavy around mid-March as people enjoy their Spring break at Walt Disney World. The early part of the month will have low to moderate crowds. Low crowds mean shorter hours and fewer shows so plan accordingly.

    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) - Fantasmic! is being offered almost every night in March, the only exception is March 21st. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it - arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Fantasmic will have two performances on March 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
    • Main Street Electric Parade (Magic Kingdom) - This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night in early March so the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a Main Street Electric Parade - this isn't really a factor as we get closer to Spring Break, when the parade is offered nightly. The Main Street Electric Parade is scheduled for March 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 ,19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31. When Disney offers a second evening parade, the later parade will be less crowded than the earlier - they've already scheduled two parades for March 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 22, ,23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 31.
    • Extra Magic Hours - (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guests) - We strongly recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day during Spring Break. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone - that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort - you don't want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you.
    • Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival - March 7 - 20, 2012. This event is included in the price of admission and even non-gardeners will enjoy the topiaries, flower beds, and displays. Weekends at Epcot will be busier than usual as local visitors come to enjoy the festival. Mondays are always a great day to visit Epcot.
    • Magic Kingdom Opens to the general public at 8:00AM on March 31st - this is an hour early than usual. Set your alarm clock to be sure you get there as soon as the theme park opens.

    Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival - March 7 - May 20, 2012. No extra ticket needed - included with your park admission. Expect Epcot to be in full bloom with flowers, topiaries, gardening demonstrations, and special activities. The Flower Power concerts are a very popular part of the Flower and Garden festival. Here's a tentative list of this year's performers:

    • April 6 - 7: Chubby Checker & The Wildcats
    • April 13 - 15: Paul Revere & The Raiders
    • April 20 - 23: The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie

    • Magic Kingdom - Plaza Ice Cream Parlor (Restaurant) will be closed January 4 - March 27, 2012.
    • Tutto Italia Ristorante (Epcot - Restaurant) closed January 8 - April 27, 2012
    • Innoventions: House of Innoventions exhibit (Epcot) closed December 4, 2011 - May 2012.
    • Honey, I Shrunk The Audience 3D (Epcot) has been replaced by Captain EO.
    • Studio Backlot Tour (Disney's Hollywood Studios) closed February 13 - March 9, 2012. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon (water park) –will be closed January 5 - March 17, 2012 for its annual refurbishment. Blizzard Beach is open during this time.
    • Disney's All-Star Music Resort - The Piano Pool will be closed February 6 - March 16, 2012. The Calypso Pool will remain open.
    • Disney's Boardwalk Inn leisure pool closed March 19 - 22, 2012. Luna Park Feature Pool & Villas leisure pool will remain open.
    • Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort/ Bay Cove Pool Slide will be closed February 20 - March 16, 2012. The pool itself will remain open.
    • Disney's Coronado Springs Resort / Ranchos leisure pool closed March 11 - 14, 2012.

    April is such a wonderful month to visit the Walt Disney World® Resort. The weather is generally warm enough to enjoy the resort swimming pool and water parks but not as hot or humid as the summer months. Most of the winter repairs and refurbishments are complete and the flowers - as always - look wonderful. The dates for school and college Spring Breaks vary widely but Easter is in April this year, which means that the first half of the month will be very crowded.

    Crowd Warnings:

    • Spring Break - Heavy crowds all month. No school, cold temperatures through most of the country but beautiful weather in Florida all work together to make big Spring Break crowds in the Walt Disney World theme parks. Most Disney guests will just plan on standing in long lines but - armed with good Theme Park Touring Plans, you can avoid hour long waits and spend your time having fun instead. TIP: Make dining reservations right away.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) -This great show is presented every except April 24 & 25, 2012. There will be two nightly Fantasmic performances on April 1 - 7 and the second show will be much less crowded than the first. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
    • Disney's Main Street Electric Parade (Magic Kingdom) - This classic nighttime parade is being offered every night this month. TIP: The second parade - usually offered at the peak of Spring Break Travel - will be much less crowded and leave you with more time to enjoy the theme park.
    • Easter - Sunday, April 8th. You'll want to avoid the Magic Kingdom and Epcot on Easter Sunday as these will be the two most crowded parks of the day.
    • Easter / April 8th - Expect Walt Disney World to be busy throughout April. The theme parks will be at their most crowded from about April 1 - 14th, 2012. The Magic Kingdom theme parks will open at 8:00AM for all guests (not just those staying at Disney hotels) from April 1 - 7, 2012. This is an hour earlier than the typical opening. You'll want to be at the gates by 7:45AM to take advantage of the shortest lines of the day.
    • Epcot Flower & Garden Festival - Epcot will be a little busier on the weekends as locals and annual passholders come to enjoy this event. Mondays are always a great day to visit Epcot.
    • Extra Magic Hours - (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest)! We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone - that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important to pay attention to Extra Magic Hours if you are not staying at a Disney resort - you don't want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you.
    • Magic Kingdom Opens to the general public at 8:00AM on March 31 - April 7, 2012 - this is an hour early than usual. The Magic Kingdom will open at 7:00AM for Disney World Resort Hotel guests.

    Special Events:

    • Epcot's Flower & Garden Festival ~ March 7 - May 12, 2012. The landscaping at Walt Disney World is always beautiful but everything is even more amazing during this festival (included in the cost of admission). Gardeners will find tips, displays, and special events just for them. Those who don't sport green thumbs will also enjoy the "Cinderellabration" topiary, Pirates Adventure Zone, Pixie Power Playground, and the popular "Flower Power" concerts.
    • March 30 - April 1: The Spinners
    • April 6 - 7: Chubby Checker & The Wildcats
    • April 13 - 15: Paul Revere & The Raiders
    • April 20 - 23: The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie

    May is a great month to visit the Disney World Theme Parks in Orlando. The weather is warm enough to swim and enjoy the water parks but you don't have the summer crowds. People worry about Memorial Day weekend crowds at the Disney parks but so many school districts don't release their students until the first or second week of June so the crowds are quite manageable - especially with a good touring plan.

    • 2012 Star Wars Weekends - Disney's Hollywood Studios (Friday - Sundays) - May 18 - 20 / May 25 - 27 / June 1 -3 / June 8 - 10, 2012. Fun Star Wars themed event that is included in the cost of admission. Non-Star Wars fans may prefer to visit Disney's Hollywood Studios on a weekday.
    • Memorial Day Weekend - A 3-Day weekend and the beginning of the summer travel season means that we'll start to see the crowds building towards the end of May. This is still a good time to visit - just use a good touring plan and you'll be fine.

    There are some things going on at Walt Disney World Resort and theme parks in June that you need to know about. We'll make sure you have all the information you need concerning Walt Disney World Theme Park crowd levels, promotions, Disney ride closures, attraction refurbishments, and special events.

    Tip: Florida gets more lightning than any other state. Check your weather report daily and plan to do the attractions - like Test Track & Lights, Motors, Action! - before the storms roll in. The water parks may close if lightning rolls in and sticks around. They'll stay open - but call everyone out of the water temporarily - if the storms are expected to pass quickly.

    Crowd Warnings:

    You will see the Disney Theme Parks grow busier and more crowded with each week in June as schools across the nation let out for summer vacation. June is still less crowded than July and the early part of the month can be quite manageable, as far as crowds are concerned.

    • 2012 Star Wars Weekends - Disney's Hollywood Studios (Friday - Sundays) - May 18 - 20 / May 25 - 27 / June 1 -3 / June 8 - 10, 2012. Fun Star Wars themed event that is included in the cost of admission. Non-Star Wars fans may prefer to visit Disney's Hollywood Studios on a weekday.

You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort - you don't want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you. TIP: Make dining reservations right away.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) - This great show is offered every night except June 6, 2012. The show is only offered once nightly and you need to arrive early. TIP: If you do decide to go, don't schedule a "sit-down" dinner. Part of the group can hold places in line while one or more go get counter-service food for the group to eat while you wait, making good use of your waiting time. Catalina Eddie's & Rosie's All-American Café are nearby. This will be especially true during the Star Wars Weekends and the morning Extra Magic Hours days. A good touring plan will help you manage this. TIP: Disney may offer add a second performance on certain nights; if they do, the second show is always much less crowded than the first. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
    • Main Street Electrical Parade (Magic Kingdom) - These wonderful classic nighttime parade is being offered every night in June. TIP: If the parade is offered twice in the same evening, the crowds will be much lower during the second parade.
    • Avoid character breakfasts. The Disney theme parks are at their least crowded for the first 1-to-2 hours after park opening. It makes more sense to enjoy the parks at their least crowded and then do a character lunch or dinner when you're ready for a break and ready to get out of the heat and crowds. If you must do a breakfast, try to get the last possible seating and treat it like a brunch.

    • Orlando Gay Days ~ May 29 - June 4, 2012 - This event is not sponsored by or affiliated with the Disney Company but visits to the Walt Disney Theme Park are included in the event line-up. Not everyone who attends this event visits the parks because of the ticket cost. For official event information, see: www.gaydays.com

    • 2012 Star Wars weekends at Disney's Hollywood Studios. (Friday - Sundays) - May 18 -20 / May 25 -27 / June 1 -3 / June 8 -10, 2012. See Star Wars characters, autograph sessions, Legends of the Force motorcade, trivia events, special edition merchandise, and more. This event is included in the cost of your Walt Disney World Resort theme park admission. Fun event for Star Wars fans. Most of the activities occur near the Star Tours attraction but this event does draw extra people. You may prefer to visit on Disney's Hollywood Studios a weekday if you are not participating in this event.

    July is a busy month at Walt Disney World. The weather can be hot and humid and the crowds really start building around the 4th of July. But don't let that discourage you - with some advance planning, you can still plan on having a great time on your WDW summer vacation.

    Our top tip for summer at Disney World : Get to the theme park at least 30 minutes before it opens. Crowds are at their lowest in the first couple of hours that the park is opened and that's your best time to ride rides with a minimum wait

    Crowd Warnings:

    July is Disney's busiest month. Christmas week and Thanksgiving are very busy, but the entire month of July is considered "peak" season.

    • 4th of July / Independence Day travel period - All of July is considered "peak season" but because many people receive a day off for this holiday, they use one less vacation day when traveling this week and that means a busy time at Disney World. This is still a good time to visit - just use a good touring plan, arrive when the parks open, and you'll be fine. TIP: Make dining reservations right away.
    • Avoid Extra Magic Hours! We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hours during the busy summer season. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone - that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort - you don't want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you.
    • Independence Day - this is one of the busiest days of the year at Walt Disney World. Parks often close to capacity so you should arrive early and plan to stay all day. Make your dining reservation immediately. Warning: The Magic Kingdom and Epcot will be crazy crowded on the 4th of July - visit a different park and you'll have a better day. Best choices? Go to Disney's Hollywood Studios which will have fireworks at 9:30PM or Animal Kingdom (and catch the Magic Kingdom fireworks from the beach at Disney's Polynesian Resort).
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) -This great show is presented every night in July. On nights with two Fantasmic performances, the second performance will always be much less crowded than the first. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it - arrive at least 70 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
    • Main Street Electric Parade (Magic Kingdom) -This parade is every night in July. Disney may decide to have the parade on certain nights and, if they do, the second parade is always less crowded than the first one.
    • TIP: Avoid Character Breakfasts during July! - The theme parks will be at their least crowded and coolest when the parks open. It is far better to book a lunch or dinner reservation that gets you out of the direct sun and out of the crowds a little later in the day. If you're really looking forward to a character breakfast, try a resort character breakfast before going to the water parks or on your departure day. Another option is to book the latest possible reservation and treat it like brunch, rather than breakfast.

    • 4th of July Fireworks. Magic Kingdom - 9:00PM fireworks, include a presentation of patriotic music timed to correspond with the pyrotechnic (fireworks) display. Disney's Hollywood Studios - 9:50PM Holiday Fireworks display. Epcot - 9:00PM Illuminations with special Fourth of July finale. TIP: The Magic Kingdom's "Celebrate America" fireworks are also offered on July 3rd at 9PM and this is a much, much better day to visit the Magic Kingdom. Avoid both the Magic Kingdom & Epcot on July 4th.
    • Epcot's "Sounds Like Summer" Concert Series ~ June 10 - July 28, 2012. These fun mini-concerts take place in Epcot's American Gardens Theatre. The 2012 Bands have not yet been announced.

    • Honey, I Shrunk the Audience (3D Movie - Epcot / Imagination Pavilion) is not being shown and has been replaced by Captain EO (featuring Michael Jackson).
    • Cirque Du Soleil - La Nouba will not have any performances July 24, 2012
    • Disney's Beach Club Resort - Cape May Restuarant closed July 9 - August 3, 2012.

    Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service) -New luggage procedure for late night arrivals. Luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM. Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk.

    September is nice because there are moderate crowds at Disney World as the kids all head back to school. The Disney Free Dining promotion can make it hard to get dining reservations so you want to book the restaurants of your choice as early as possible - up to 180 days prior to arrival.. The weather can be hot and humid in Orlando in September but, by doing a little advance planning, you can expect to have a great time on your late summer / early fall Disney vacation The information below will help you get started with your Disney vacation planning and let you know about any Disney rides closed during your visit.

    Crowd Warnings:

    • Free Dining Promotion - September isn't a particularly high crowd time at Walt Disney World - they wouldn't offer the "free dining promotion", if it was. But you will have a lot of competition at the sit-down restaurants; especially the most popular locations like Chef Mickey's, Cinderella's Royal Table, Le Cellier, etc. Make your dining reservations as soon as you are eligible. Fantasmic Dinner Packages will probably completely fill the first day that they're offered. At this time, dining reservations can be booked 180 days prior to your arrival.
    • Labor Day Weekend (September 3rd - 5th) - Because so many schools are back in session, this holiday doesn't draw nearly as many people as the 4th of July. Don't think the parks will be empty though - there will still be a lot of people looking for one last hoorah! before summer ends. TIP: Make dining reservations right away.
    • Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival ~ September 30 – November 13, 2011. This event is included with regular theme park admission though there a few special events related to this festival that have a separate admission fee. The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is very popular as chefs and winemakers from around the world set up booths where you can savor the wonderful flavors offered for sale. There will be food & wine themed demonstrations as well. You typically can use your Disney Dining Plan meal and snack credits at this event - in fact, many people "hoard" their snack credits just for this event. Warning: This event is very, very popular. Expect Epcot to be busier than usual on weekends as locals and annual passholders come to enjoy the festival. TIP: Monday is always a great day to visit Epcot.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) - Great news! This wonderful show is being presented every night in September. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it - arrive at least 60 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children. TIP: If Fantasmic! isn’t a priority, visit Disney’s Hollywood Studios on a day it is not offered and you’ll enjoy lower crowds.
    • Disney's Main Street Electrical Parade (Magic Kingdom) - This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring a Main Street Electrical Parade. The Main Street Electrical Parade will be presented on September 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 14, 17, 18, 19, 21, 24, 25, 26, 28, 2011.
    • Extra Magic Hours - (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest). We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park of the day. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone - that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. These nights require a special event ticket - you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets. Advance ticket prices: 1 night - $44.95 per person, 2 nights - $75.95. Warning: Disney's Magic Kingdom theme park will close to the public at 6:00PM on Friday, Sept. 10th and Saturday, Sept. 11th. There is a lot to see and do at this park so - you'll probably want to visit this park on a day with longer park hours if you're not attending the Nights of Joy.
    • Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Disney's Magic Kingdom) - 7:00PM to Midnight -September 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30, October 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31, and November 1. This special event is a lot of fun for families, with rides, trick-or-treating, and fun party type events. These nights require a special event ticket - you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets. Ticket prices vary with an advance purchase discount offered on select nights. There are a limited number of tickets sold. TIP: A lot of children dress up for this event but select costumes that will let your kids comfortably enjoy the rides and attractions - remember that September can be hot & muggy in Orlando. Warning: The Magic Kingdom will close to the public at 7:00PM on party nights. Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, Whispering Canyon, etc.) will fill their reservations early as people look for something nearby to enjoy after the early park closing.

    October is a great month to visit Walt Disney world. It is still warm enough to really enjoy the hotel pools and the Disney water parks but it's not quite as hot as summer. The kids are back in school so crowds are down; of course, some schools are offering a fall break and you will want a good touring plan to keep lines to a minimum. October is also the month with the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival and the Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties. Here is some information to make your October trip to Walt Disney World Resort and theme parks better than ever.

    Crowd Warnings:

    • October 1, 2011 - Walt Disney World's 40th Anniversary. The Magic Kingdom (Disney's World's first theme park) will be especially busy this day. There will be a special 40th Anniversary presentation on the Castle Stage at 10:00AM. The Main Street Bakery will be selling special 40th Anniversary cupcakes. The Wishes Fireworks at 9PM will have a special finale. Check the Diamond Horseshoe for special events as well. If you go to the Magic Kingdom today, go because you'll enjoy being among so many sentimental Disney fans. If you don't really care about the anniversary, you might enjoy the Magic Kingdom more on a less crowded day.
    • Columbus Day Weekend - three day weekends always bump the crowds up a little bit but you'll manage just fine with a good touring plan.
    • Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival ~ September 30 - November 13, 2011. This event is included with regular theme park admission; there a few special events related to this festival that has a separate admission fee. The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is very popular as chefs and winemakers from around the world set up booths where you can savor the wonderful flavors offered for sale. There will be food & wine themed demonstrations as well. The Main Street Electrical Parade is very impressive and worth seeing so plan your visit to the Magic Kingdom on a day it is offered, arrive a bit before park opening in the morning, and use a good touring plan to keep you ahead of the crowds and out of the long lines.

    • October 1, 2011 - Magic Kingdom celebrates Walt Disney World's 40th Anniversary. Special presentation at the Castle State at 10AM, special events throughout the day.
    • Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party (Disney's Magic Kingdom)- 7:00PM to Midnight - September 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30, October 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31 and November 1, 2011. This special event is a lot of fun for families, with rides, trick-or-treating and fun party type events. These nights require a special event ticket - you cannot enter using your Magic Your Way or Park Hopper tickets. Ticket prices vary with an advance purchase discount offered on select nights. TIP: A lot of children dress up for this event but select costumes that will let your kids comfortably enjoy the rides and attractions - remember that October can still be quite warm in Orlando. Warning: The Magic Kingdom will close to the public at 7:00PM on party nights. Magic Kingdom resort area restaurants (Chef Mickey's, 1900 Park Fare, Whispering Canyon, etc.) will fill their reservations early as people look for something nearby to enjoy after the early park closing.
    • Disney Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend - September 30 - October 1, 2011. This event shouldn't affect park touring.
    • Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival (Downtown Disney) - October 15, 2011 - Races will run from approximately 8:00AM - 4:30PM.
    • Epcot's International Food & Wine Festival ~ September 30 - November 13, 2011. This event is included with regular theme park admission; there a few special events related to this festival that have a separate admission fee. The Epcot Food & Wine Festival is very popular as chefs and winemakers from around the world set up booths where you can savor the wonderful flavors offered. You typically can use your Disney Dining Plan meal and snack credits at this event - in fact, many people "hoard" their snack credits just for this event. Warning: This event is very, very popular. Expect Epcot to be busier than usual on weekends as locals and annual passholders come to enjoy the festival.
    • The Eat to the Beat concert series (included with admission) is always a fun part of the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. This year's performers (subject to change):

    • Mickey's Toontown Fair (Magic Kingdom) is closing on February 11, 2011. A new area is being constructed in this space. The Walt Disney Railroad will continue to run but the Toontown station will be closed during construction. The Disney Princesses, Mickey Mouse, and Minnie Mouse Meet-and-Greets are now offered at the new Town Square Theater; FASTPASS tickets available. TinkerBell & Friends are currently meeting guests in the Magic Kingdom, at Tinker Bell's Magical Nook, at the Adventureland Verandah.
    • Magic Kingdom - Swiss Family Treehouse closed September 8 - November 17, 2011.
    • Epcot - Honey, I Shrunk The Audience 3D has been replaced by Captain EO, featuring Michael Jackson.
    • Disney's Hollywood Studios - Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show closed October 3 - 6, 2011.
    • Animal Kingdom - The Tropicals (musical group) will have their final performance on October 29, 2011.
    • Blizzard Beach Water Park closed October 30 - December 3, 2011 for its annual refurbishment.
    • Downtown Disney - Happy Haunting Trick-or-Treating in Downtown Disney has been discontinued due to crowds exceeding the space available.
    • Disney's Grand Floridian Resort - The Spa is closed but the fitness center is open.
    • Disney's Port Orleans Riverside Resort - Magnolia Bend Leisure Pool (near buildings 80/85) closed September 5 - October 7, 2011. The resort's other pools are open.
    • Disney's Palm Golf course - closed October 10 - 23, 2011.
    • Disney's Magnolia Golf Course - Closed October 10 - 23, 2011.
    • Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course - closed October 24 - November 3, 2011.

    November is a wonderful time to visit Disney World because the weather is cooler and the crowds are moderate for most of the month. Thanksgiving week is crazy busy so book the restaurants of your choice as early as possible - up to 180 days prior to arrival. By doing a little advance planning, you can expect to have a great time on your fall Disney vacation, even if there are crowds. The incredible Christmas decorations are another very special part of a Disney vacation in November. The information below will help you get started with your Disney vacation planning and let you know about any Disney rides closed during your visit.

    Crowd Warnings:

    • Jersey Week - The New Jersey Public schools all have November 10th & 11th off for teacher-in-service days. This has a huge impact on attendance during the week of November 7th as thousands of families take the opportunity to take a few extra days and head to Disneyworld.
    • Thanksgiving Week - "Holiday Season" is even more crowded than "Peak Season" so expect very high crowd levels November 21st - 27th. Heavy crowds can be fun because Disney extends park hours and adds extra show times but you'll need a good touring plan to help you avoid horrible lines.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) -This great show is presented every night this month except November 5th and November 17th. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it - arrive 60-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Disney may add a second, later performance on certain evenings during the busiest times - if they do, the later showing of Fantasmic! will always be less crowded than the earlier one. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes. The scene is fairly intense and can be frightening to small children.
    • Disney's Main Street Electric Parade (Magic Kingdom) - This wonderful nighttime parade is not offered every night and the Magic Kingdom will be more crowded on days featuring Disney's Main Street Electric Parade. Disney's Main Street Electric Parade will be presented on November 2, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 28, 2011. If Disney offers a second evening parade, the later parade will be less crowded than the earlier.
    • Extra Magic Hours - (Special hours only available to Disney resort hotel guest) We recommend that everyone avoid the Extra Magic Hour park(s) of the day. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone - that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time. You'll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park. This is doubly important if you are not staying at a Disney resort - you don't want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you.
    • TIP: Everyone should avoid the Magic Kingdom and Epcot on Thanksgiving Day - try Animal Kingdom or Disney's Hollywood Studios instead. You absolutely, positively need a good touring plan to keep you ahead of the crowds and out of the long lines. Make any dining reservations right away!

If you are not doing this event, you will want to be aware that the Magic Kingdom closes early - at 7PM - on the nights of the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and they generally won't have the Disney's Main Street Parade those nights

    Hey there! Your December 2011 trip to Walt Disney World is coming up quickly - are you excited? I want to pass on a little information about crowds, ride closures, and special events that might affect your trip

    Crowd Warnings:

    • Avoid going to the Magic Kingdom and Epcot on Christmas Day and New Years Eve. There is a good chance that the park could close because of capacity level crowds and the lines will be horrible. Disney's Hollywood Studios & Disney's Animal Kingdom theme parks are much better choices for these days.
    • December 1 - 21, 2011. News is getting out about the fun to be had in Walt Disney World in early December but the crowds are only mid-level and quite manageable. Just be sure to watch your "Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party" dates because the Magic Kingdom will close early those nights and won't have the Disney's Main Street Electric Parade, which replaced the SpectroMagic Parade this summer.
    • December 22, 2011 - January 2, 2012 - Christmas Break! You will experience "Holiday Crowds" which are even heavier than "Peak" crowds. Disney closed to capacity crowds several times during 06 Christmas Seasons and they expect the same thing to happen again this year. A good touring plan with "Best Days" information is absolutely essential if you don't want to spend your whole vacation standing in line.
    • Fantasmic! (Disney's Hollywood Studios) -We're so happy to report that Fantasmic! is being offered every night this month. This is a very popular show and we highly recommend it - arrive 70-90 minutes early, if you do not have a Fantasmic! Dinner package. Fantasmic! will have 2 performances on December 1 – 6, 9 – 25. They'll have 3 performances on December 26 – 31. The latest performance will always be the least crowded. Warning: This show is excellent but it does feature villains for a good 8-10 minutes.     • Pop Warner National Football, Dance, & cheer Events at Walt Disney World - December 3 - 12, 2011. These events take place at ESPN Wide World of Sports and the events themselves will not affect you. You may encounter groups of young athletes and their families in your resort, especially at the All-Star Resorts, and at the theme parks. Don't let the chatter on some of the forums scare you - this event has a minimal impact on crowds. Enthusiastic youths can raise the noise level at the resorts though; guests staying at a value resort may want to add a request for a room in a quiet location to your reservation. Expect the resort food court to be busy at breakfast, if there are athletic groups staying at your resort.
    • Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom 8:00AM openings for everyone (not just Disney hotel guests) on select mornings in December. Magic Kingdom opens to everyone at 8:00AM on Dec. 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16 - 31. Disney's Animal Kingdom opens to everyone at 8:00AM on December 18 - 31. These early mornings mean Disney expects crowds so get there when the park opens and enjoy short lines, then take a mid-day break when the crowds build.

    New Character Meal at Disney World:

    • Beginning December 4, 2011 - Character lunches with Daisy and Donald Duck will be added to Tusker House Restaurant in Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. This location has offered a character breakfast for some time now and we're very excited about the addition of lunch. In our opinion, character lunches are better than character breakfasts because you get to ride the rides while the crowds are at their lowest (morning) and then sit down for a meal when the crowds are heavier and you're ready for a break. This location does participate in the Disney Dining Plan.

If you are not doing this event, you will want to be aware that the Magic Kingdom closes early - at 7PM - on the nights of the Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party and they generally won't have the Disney's Main Street Parade those nights.
    • Animal Kingdom - Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade ~ November 8, 2011 - January 3, 2012. A special holiday parade where Mickey Mouse and his friends celebrate teh season safari style.
    • Christmas Church Service at Walt Disney World - December 25, 2011. Religious services are being offered at Disney's Contemporary Resort in the Fantasia Ballroom. Catholic mass is December 25th at 8:00AM and 10:15AM. Protest service offered at 9:00AM. Guests are asked to use the WDW transportation to the Contemporary Resort - parking will not be available at the resort. Start at the Magic Kingdom and take the monorail to the Contemporary Resort or use the walking trail. Guests parked at the Walt Disney World Ticket and Transportation Center (also Magic Kingdom parking) can take the monorail to the Contemporary Resort.

    Temporary Attraction Closures and refurbishments:

    • Ariel's Grotto & Pooh's Playful Spot (Magic Kingdom) have closed to make room for the big Fantasyland expansion project.
    • Mickey's Toontown Square (Magic Kingdom) closed on February 11, 2011. A new area is being contructed in this space. The Walt Disney World Railroad will continue to run but the Toontown Station will be closed during construction. The Disney Princesses, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse Meet-an-Greets are now in the new Town Square Theater; FASTPASS tickets available. Tinker Bell and Friends are meeting guests at Tinker Bell's Magical Nook at the Adventureland Verandah in the Magic Kingdom.
    • Honey, I Shrunk The Audience 3D (Epcot) has been replaced by Captain EO, featuring Michael Jackson
    • Yakitori House (Restaurant - Epcot) will be closed August 8, 2011 - December 1, 2011.
    • Disney's Blizzard Beach (water park) - will be closed October 20 - December 3, 2011 for its annual refurbishment.
    • Disney's Typhoon Lagoon (water park) - will be closed December 4, 2011 - March 17, 2012 for its annual refurbishment.
    • Disney's Polynesian Resort - Beach Sand Renourishment from Dec. 24, 2011 - Jan. 10, 2012.
    • Disney's Grand Floridian Spa will be closed from September 19, 2011 to Mid-2013. The fitness center will remain open. Spa services are available at The Spa at Disney's Saratoga Stprings Resort.
    • Disney's Magnolia Golf Course will be closed November 28 - December 7, 2011.
    • Disney's Oak Trail Golf Course will be closed December 8 - 16, 2011.
    • Disney's Osprey Ridge & Lake Buena Vista Golf Courses will be closed Christmas Day, December 25, 2011.

    Disney’s Magical Express (Airport Shuttle Service) -New luggage procedure for late night arrivals. Luggage service will no longer be available for arrivals to Orlando International Airport after 10:00PM. Collect your luggage at baggage claim and take with you to the Disney’s Magical Express check-in desk.
